At the beginning of the 8th century, just a hundred years after the rise of Islam, Saint John of Damascus, one of the great fathers of the church, issued a warning. In his work on heresies, he wrote a chapter titled The Heresy of the Ishmaelites. From the heart of the early Islamic expansion, John saw Islam not as the new faith, but as a heresy, a continuation of Arianism, a deceptive superstition, as he called it. He named Muhammad a false prophet, and Islam a forerunner of the Antichrist. Now, Islam was still forming, but Saint John already discerned its essence: an ideology that sought power, not salvation; domination, not communion. His words became the first systematic Christian attempt to confront Islam intellectually and theologically, and to our age, almost prophetically. Centuries later, Islam grew into one of the world’s great religions, now counting over two billion adherents. Yet its expansion was rarely peaceful. The sword accompanied its creed. And in our own time, its radical offspring have overshadowed the moderate voice. The advance of Islam across the West, especially in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and France, should serve as a warning to the remnants of the Western Christendom. BEFORE MILOŠEVIĆ. BEFORE 1989. BEFORE THE WAR. ”I have been engaged in illegal activities since 1964.” Those are the words of Ahmet Qeriqi, an Albanian political activist and later KLA participant, speaking in his own testimony published by Oral History Kosovo. Qeriqi describes clandestine political networks, links to movements advocating Albanian national unification, and the establishment of another organisation in 1976. He also recounts several convictions under Yugoslav law. This is a crucial distinction in the historical record: political demands, illegal underground organisation and criminal violence are not interchangeable concepts. The same legal principles must apply whether we examine Kosovo, the Basque Country or Northern Ireland. Peaceful political advocacy is one matter. Abduction, torture and murder are another. A proclaimed struggle for national liberation does not provide immunity for crimes. And the ICTY later established that KLA personnel unlawfully detained and abused Kosovo Albanians suspected of collaborating with Serbian authorities, with a KLA guard convicted for participating in the murder of prisoners. These historical facts cannot be erased by beginning the story with Milošević. The organisations existed. The political objectives existed. The underground networks existed. Long before 1989. WASHINGTON SENDS A CLEAR MESSAGE TO PRISTINA The Trump administration has reaffirmed that the United States will not resume its Strategic Dialogue with Kosovo until Pristina fulfills its obligations toward the Serbian community. This is a significant diplomatic signal. For too long, the legitimate concerns of Kosovo Serbs have been overshadowed by political considerations and selective interpretations of human rights and democratic principles. The protection of religious freedom, cultural heritage, property rights, and the political rights of the Serbian community should never be negotiable. These are fundamental rights, not concessions to be granted at the discretion of political authorities. Washington’s position also demonstrates that American support for Kosovo’s independence does not translate into unconditional support for every policy pursued by its government. The message should be clear: democratic legitimacy requires respect for minority rights, the rule of law, and previously undertaken international commitments.
